Competition System

Competition System: Regular season begins in early November of every year, and lasts to about April 15th of the next year. Play-offs begins in late April, and lasts to mid June till deciding the champion. The 30 NBA teams play totally 1230 matches in regular season. Each team play 82 matches. A team faces opponents in its own division four times a year (16 games); each team plays six of the teams from the other two divisions in its conference four times (24 games), the remaining four teams three times (12 games); each team plays all the teams in the other conference twice apiece (30 games). After regular season, the top 8 ranked by the winning probability (the number of winning matches/82) in each conference, and totally 16 teams take part in play-offs, 1VS8 and 3VS6, 2VS7 and 4VS5. The playoffs follow a tournament format. Each team plays an opponent in a best-of-seven format.

Ranking rule: NBA ranking rules are to rank NBA teams’ records and decide the seeds and rankings in play-offs. They set out how to decide the seeds when draw, namely tie-breaker rules.

The basic principles to determine tie-breaker
(1)No need tie-breaker rules (teams with higher total winning probability rank top)
(2)When the winners of each division have the same winning probability, the winner of non-division ranks top.
(3)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability ;
(4)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability in its own division ;
(5)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability n its own league;
(6)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability in the play-offs of its own league;
(7)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability in the play-offs of another league;
(8)The team ranks top when having more net scores in all the season.

Determine the ranking of play-offs
The top 1-4 seeds in each league consist of the winners from 3 divisions and the team with the best record among the remaining ones. The 4 teams and the 5-8 seeds in play-offs are ranked by the record in regular season.If two or more teams have the same record, the ranking will be determined as the following rules.
When two teams have the same record, the seeds in play-offs(including the winner of divisions) are determined in accordance with the rules of paragraph a. More than two teams have the same record, the seeds in play-offs are determined in accordance with the rules of paragraph b. The guidelines of ranking are listed in paragraph c.

a: Two teams have the same record
(1)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability ;
(2)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability in its own division (only applied when the two teams come from the same division);
(3)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability in its own league ;
(4)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability in the play-offs of its own league (including the teams which have the same regular-season record as the one of play-offs);
(5)The team ranks top when having higher winning probability in the play-offs of another league (including the team which has the same regular-season record as the one of play-offs);
(6)The team ranks top when having more net scores that are equaled to the total points in all the season minus the total loss ones (“Points Difference”).

b: More than two teams have the same record
(1)The teams rank top when having higher winning probability of all matches.
(2)The teams rank top when having higher winning probability in their own division (only applied when all teams come from the same division);
(3)The teams rank top when having higher winning probability in their own league ;
(4)The teams rank top when having higher winning probability in the play-offs of their own league (including the teams which have the same regular-season record as the ones of play-offs);
(5)The teams rank top when having more net scores that are equaled to the total points in all the season minus the total loss ones (“Points Difference”).

c: The guideline of tie-breaker
The following guidelines should be followed when the rules above are applied to determine the seeds in play-offs.
(1)(a)Since the winners of the three divisions will determine the rankings of the top 4 seeds, the tie-breaker to determine the winners of divisions should be applied to other tie-breaker’s determination first.
(b)When the winners of divisions must be determined by tie-breaker, the result of tie-breaker is only applied to determine the winners of divisions and their places in play-offs, instead of other places in play-offs.

(2)If more than two teams have the same record, the tie-breaker rule of section b will be applied as the listed order till the followings occur:
(a)According to appropriate tie-breaker rules, each team with the same record is not the same in the winning probability or the net scores (completely “tie-breaker”). Under the circumstances, the team with the best winning probability or net scores will obtain the highest ranking of play-offs, and the next best one receives seed two in the play-offs. By that analogy, more tie-breaker rules do not need to be applied.
(b)According to appropriate tie-breaker rules, one or more teams (but not all) with the same record have different winning probability or net scores (partly “tie-breaker”). Under the circumstances, (x) any teams with better record on the basis of tie-breaker will obtain higher rankings in play-offs than the remaining ones; while (y) teams with the same record still keep balanced under the tie-breaker rule. If the state is kept by the two teams, rules (1)-(6) of paragraph a above will be applied to compare from the beginning. If it is kept by two more teams, rules (1)-(5) of paragraph b above will be applied to compare from the beginning, and follow the the guidelines of paragraph c.

(3)If tie-breaker cannot be determined in accordance with the rules of paragraph a or b above, the seeds of balanced teams in play-offs will be determined by random draw.

d: Home court advantage
To determine the belonging of the home court advantage, the teams with the same record will be determined tie-breaker by the play-offs’ seeds.
