APOEL had some ups and downs during the season, but the team once again managed to win the league competition, ending the season with four points more than second placed AEK Larnaca, however have suffered loss in the Cup's finale going down to Apollon in May.
They are more than just a simple competitor in Europe usually ending in one of competition's group phases and no doubt that their ambition is entrance of Champions League for this season. They have a new coach in this season installing Dutch Mario Been, who previously worked with Feyenoord and Genk, but also as assistant in Fenerbahce and actually was their manager in last five matches of previous season, having enough time to get decent knowledge of the team he has at his disposal.
APOEL had bunch of preparation matches before this game, since they started the preparation period late in June, drawing against Arka Gdynia and Sandecha, but also winning over Spartaks, greek side Panionios and Cypriot team Doxa last Thursday with a 2:1 result. Having in mind they played so many games, the team can't be far away from competitive form, even though their league isn't yet to start.
Dudelange, on the other side, had an excellent domestic season since the team managed to take the double crown, winning the league thanks to better goal difference than Differdange, the sides ended with same number of points - 65, nine more than third placed Fola.
However, they also won the Cup competition confirming that they are the best side in the league with a 4:1 victory in the Cup's finale over Fola, late in May. They got famous back in 2012 when the team excluded Austrian champions Salzburg however without success since then, suffering six straight exclusions after first matches played in Europe. Out of their friendly matches, most notable was a 2:2 draw against Standard Liege last Wednesday evening.
Even though it's early in the new season, I don't see this match being a close one actually. APOEL did enough of friendly matches for this stage, while Dudelange made their name with a victory few years back, but now shouldn't be able to stay competitive for too long. Two goals difference should really a minimum for the home side here.
