The game was halted after the layup, to which the Los Angeles crowd gave Taurasi a round of applause. Even though the Mercury lost 90-59, Taurasi's 19 points still led all players on both teams.
It took Taurasi 13 seasons in the league to reach the mark, while it took Thompson — who set the record in 2010 —17 seasons.
Thompson even took to Instagram to make a congratulatory video for Taurasi, referring to her as "D-Money."
At the beginning of June, Taurasi broke the WNBA record for most career 3-pointers made, passing Katie Smith's mark of 906.
